Blackpool Sands

Blackpool Sands is located on the South Devon coast between Dartmouth and Stoke Fleming, set within a wooded valley that opens onto a crescent-shaped bay. Despite its name, the beach is composed of fine shingle rather than sand. It is privately managed and maintained to a higher standard than many nearby beaches, giving it a more organised and controlled character.

The beach is relatively wide and gently sloping, with smooth, fine shingle that is more comfortable underfoot than larger pebbles found elsewhere along the coast. It is enclosed by tree-covered slopes on either side, creating a sheltered setting compared to more exposed beaches in the area. The water is typically clear, and the beach shelves gradually into the sea. Blackpool Sands is known for its clean environment, calm conditions and suitability for swimming and general beach use.

Access is via a road leading down from the A379, with a large pay-and-display car park located directly behind the beach. The approach is straightforward, though it can become busy during peak periods. Facilities are well developed and include toilets, showers, a café, shop and seasonal lifeguard cover. The beach is reached with minimal walking from the car park, making it one of the more accessible beaches in South Devon.

Blackpool Sands is suitable for families, swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding. It is not a primary surfing beach due to its sheltered position and limited wave activity. The beach is usable at all tide levels, with little reduction in available space compared to sandy beaches. The sheltered nature makes it a practical option in a range of weather conditions, though it can still be affected by wind and swell. It can be visited throughout the year, with the most favourable conditions typically during the summer months.
