Mothecombe Beach

Mothecombe Beach is located on the South Devon coast within the Erme Estuary, between Bigbury-on-Sea and Noss Mayo. It forms part of the privately managed Flete Estate and is accessed through farmland and woodland. The beach has a more controlled and less developed character than many others in the area, with restricted opening periods and a quieter atmosphere outside peak times.

The beach is predominantly sandy and relatively wide, particularly at low tide when large areas of firm sand are exposed. It is divided by the mouth of the River Erme, which flows across the beach and creates a natural separation between sections. The surrounding landscape includes low cliffs, dunes and open countryside rather than built-up areas. Mothecombe is known for its clean sand, estuary setting and views across to Wonwell Beach on the opposite side of the river.

Access is via a narrow road leading to a pay-and-display car park on the estate, with a short walk down to the beach. The approach is straightforward, though the road can be busy during peak periods. Facilities are limited compared to larger beaches but may include toilets and a seasonal café. There are no extensive services, and visitors should check opening times in advance as access can be restricted at certain times of year.

Mothecombe Beach is suitable for families, walking and general beach use in a quieter setting. The presence of the river makes it popular for paddling, though care is needed due to changing currents and tidal conditions. It is not a primary surfing location, as the estuary influences wave patterns. The beach is most usable at mid to low tide when the sand is at its widest. It can be visited throughout the year, subject to access restrictions, with conditions influenced by weather and tide.
