Salcombe Walks

Salcombe is one of the best locations in South Devon for coastal walking, with direct access to the South West Coast Path and a range of estuary and inland routes. The area is defined by open headlands, sheltered coves and the wide expanse of the Kingsbridge Estuary. Most walks involve steady climbs and descents, particularly along the coast, but distances are manageable and suitable for half-day or full-day outings.

Overview

Walks from Salcombe fall into three main types: coastal routes along the South West Coast Path, estuary-side walks with more sheltered conditions, and inland circuits through farmland and quiet lanes. The coastline provides the most consistent views, while ferry crossings across the estuary make it possible to create varied circular routes without retracing steps.

Salcombe to Bolt Head

Distance: 3 miles (one way)
Difficulty: moderate

A straightforward coastal walk heading south-west from Salcombe. The path climbs steadily onto open headland with wide views over the estuary and out to sea. Bolt Head marks the southernmost point, with exposed cliffs and a clear sense of the coastline’s scale. The return follows the same route.

Salcombe to Hope Cove

Distance: 5 miles (one way)
Difficulty: moderate to challenging

This longer section of the South West Coast Path continues beyond Bolt Head towards Hope Cove. The route includes several ascents and descents but offers some of the best coastal scenery in the area, with a mix of open cliffs and small coves. Hope Cove provides a practical end point with facilities and transport links.

East Portlemouth and Gara Rock Circular

Distance: 5–6 miles (circular)
Difficulty: moderate

A ferry crossing from Salcombe leads to East Portlemouth on the eastern side of the estuary. From here, the route follows the coast path south towards Gara Rock before looping inland through quiet countryside. This walk combines coastal views with more sheltered inland sections and avoids the busier paths near Salcombe.

Salcombe to Snapes Point

Distance: 2–3 miles (one way)
Difficulty: easy to moderate

A shorter walk heading north-east from Salcombe towards Snapes Point. The route is less exposed than the open coast and offers elevated views across the Kingsbridge Estuary. It is a good option for a shorter outing or when conditions on the coast are less favourable.

Soar Mill Cove and Bolberry Down

Distance: 4–5 miles (circular)
Difficulty: moderate

Starting a short distance from Salcombe, this circular walk explores the coastline around Soar Mill Cove and the higher ground of Bolberry Down. The route includes open coastal sections, grassy headland and views across to Bolt Head and Start Point. It is one of the quieter areas of coastline nearby.

Choosing a Walk

For the most direct coastal scenery, the routes towards Bolt Head and Hope Cove provide the best continuous views. For a quieter and more varied walk, the East Portlemouth and Gara Rock circular offers a combination of coast and countryside. Snapes Point is the easiest option, while Soar Mill Cove provides a balance of scenery and relative seclusion.
