The South Devon Railway is a heritage steam railway running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. It follows the valley of the River Dart through a largely rural landscape and is one of the longest established preserved railways in the South West. The line is known for its quiet setting, traditional stations and strong connection to Devon’s railway heritage.
About South Devon Railway
The railway occupies part of the former Great Western Railway branch line that once linked Buckfastleigh with Totnes and Ashburton. After closure in the 1960s, the line was preserved and reopened by the Dart Valley Railway company, later becoming the South Devon Railway as a heritage operation.
The route runs for approximately 7 miles (11 km) and closely follows the River Dart for much of its length. The surrounding landscape consists of wooded valley sides, farmland and small riverside settlements, giving the line a distinctly inland and rural character.
Key stations include Buckfastleigh (main base), Staverton and Totnes Riverside. Buckfastleigh serves as the operational centre, with workshops, a museum and visitor facilities. Totnes Riverside is located a short distance from the mainline station, connected by footpath.
The railway operates a mix of steam and heritage diesel locomotives, with restored carriages typical of mid-twentieth-century British Rail travel.
The Journey
The journey begins at Buckfastleigh and follows the River Dart downstream through a narrow valley. The track runs close to the water in several places, with views of the river, surrounding woodland and occasional open fields.
Staverton station provides a traditional intermediate stop with a well-preserved rural station setting. The line then continues towards Totnes, where the valley opens slightly before reaching Totnes Riverside station.
Compared with coastal lines, the scenery is more enclosed and consistent, with an emphasis on river views and woodland rather than wide vistas. The experience is quieter and more focused on the railway itself.
Practical Information
Services operate regularly during the main season, with a mix of steam and diesel traction depending on the timetable. Special event days and themed services are also held throughout the year.
Parking is available at Buckfastleigh, which is the primary access point for visitors. Totnes Riverside can also be used, though it has more limited facilities.
Tickets are available for single and return journeys, and combined tickets with local attractions are sometimes offered. The railway is suitable for families, with relatively straightforward access at the main stations.
Summary
The South Devon Railway offers a traditional heritage railway experience in a quiet rural setting. Its riverside route, preserved stations and historical continuity from the Dart Valley Railway make it one of the most representative steam railways in Devon.
