Dartmouth Steam Railway

The Dartmouth Steam Railway is a coastal heritage railway in South Devon running between Paignton and Kingswear. It is one of the most established preserved railways in the county and is known for its combination of steam train travel, coastal scenery and links to the River Dart. The line forms part of a wider transport network that includes ferry connections to Dartmouth.

About Dartmouth Steam Railway

The railway follows the former Great Western Railway branch line that once connected Paignton with Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. It was preserved in the late twentieth century and continues to operate as a fully functioning heritage line with regular services.

The route runs for approximately 6.7 miles (10.8 km), passing through a varied landscape that includes coastal sections, wooded estuary edges and open countryside. Unlike many heritage railways, parts of the line run close to the sea, particularly around Goodrington Sands, giving it a distinctly coastal character.

Key stations include Paignton (main departure point), Goodrington Sands, Churston and Kingswear. Kingswear station sits directly on the River Dart, with passenger ferries providing a short crossing to Dartmouth. This integrated journey — train followed by river ferry — is a defining feature of the experience.

The railway operates both steam and heritage diesel locomotives depending on the season and timetable. Carriages are typically restored British Rail stock, maintaining a traditional mid-twentieth-century appearance.

The Journey

The journey begins in Paignton and quickly reaches the coastline at Goodrington Sands, where the track runs alongside the beach. From here, the line curves inland and then follows the western side of the River Dart estuary.

The section between Churston and Kingswear is the most scenic, with elevated views across the estuary, wooded slopes and occasional glimpses of boats on the river. The approach into Kingswear is gradual, ending at a compact riverside station.

From Kingswear, passengers can take a short ferry across to Dartmouth, extending the journey into a combined rail and river experience.

Practical Information

Trains run regularly during the main tourist season, with reduced services outside peak months. Both steam and diesel services are used, and specific locomotive types vary by day.

Parking is available in Paignton, which serves as the primary access point. Kingswear has more limited parking, and many visitors use the railway as a one-way journey combined with the ferry.

Tickets can be purchased for single or return journeys, and combined tickets including river boat trips are often available. The railway is family-friendly and accessible, though platform and carriage access can vary depending on the station and rolling stock.

Summary

The Dartmouth Steam Railway is one of Devon’s most complete heritage railway experiences, combining a preserved railway line with coastal scenery and river connections. Its relatively long route, varied landscapes and integration with Dartmouth make it one of the most distinctive steam railway journeys in the region.
