Dawlish Warren Beach

Dawlish Warren Beach is located on the South Devon coast at the mouth of the River Exe, opposite Exmouth. It forms part of a long sand spit extending from the seaside resort of Dawlish Warren, with the Exe Estuary on one side and the open sea on the other. The beach sits within a designated nature reserve, giving it a combination of traditional seaside facilities and protected coastal habitat.

The beach is predominantly sandy, with a wide, gently sloping shoreline that expands significantly at low tide. It extends for a considerable distance along the spit, with more open and quieter areas found further away from the main access points. The surrounding landscape includes sand dunes, grassland and estuary views. Dawlish Warren Beach is known for its large size, varied environment and suitability for a range of activities.

Access is straightforward from Dawlish Warren village, with several large car parks located nearby. The beach can be reached directly from the seafront with minimal walking required. Facilities are extensive and include toilets, cafes, shops, amusements and seasonal lifeguard cover. The main beach area near the resort is more developed, while sections further along the spit have fewer services and a more natural setting.

Dawlish Warren Beach is suitable for families, swimming, walking and general beach use. The gentle slope and sandy surface make it appropriate for younger visitors, and the size of the beach allows for quieter areas away from the main resort. It is not a primary surfing location due to its position within the estuary mouth, though some wave activity can occur. The beach is most usable at low tide when the sand is at its widest. It can be visited throughout the year, with the summer months offering the most favourable conditions and full access to facilities.
