Devon Inland Towns and Villages

Devon’s inland towns and villages are located away from the coastline, but many are still within easy reach of the sea while offering access to countryside areas such as Dartmoor and Exmoor. For visitors, these locations are less about seaside access and more about historic character, landscapes, markets and regional culture. Many also work well as bases for exploring both the north and south coasts.

Unlike purely functional inland centres, the places listed below are selected for their appeal to visitors. This includes historic architecture, attractive settings, independent shops, or proximity to well-known walking areas.

Main Inland Towns

These towns are larger or better connected, while still offering enough character or nearby attractions to justify a visit or longer stay.

Exeter – Devon’s main city, centred around its cathedral and historic streets, with a wide range of shops, museums and transport links.
Totnes – Distinctive market town on the River Dart, known for independent shops, historic streets and a strong cultural identity.
Tavistock – Historic market town on the western edge of Dartmoor, with a large pannier market and links to mining heritage.
Okehampton – Northern gateway to Dartmoor, providing direct access to open moorland, walking routes and Okehampton Castle.
Ashburton – Small but lively town on the southern edge of Dartmoor, known for independent shops and food culture.

Smaller Inland Towns and Villages

These locations are generally quieter and more rural, but are included for their setting, character or access to surrounding landscapes.

Chagford – Attractive Dartmoor town with a traditional feel, narrow streets and access to moorland walking.
Widecombe-in-the-Moor – Well-known Dartmoor village with a large green, historic church and strong rural character.
Moretonhampstead – Historic market town with a central position on Dartmoor, surrounded by tors and open countryside.
South Molton – Traditional market town in North Devon, known for its pannier market and access to Exmoor.
Hatherleigh – Small, quiet market town with a strong agricultural heritage and a slower pace of life.

Inland towns and villages in Devon are suited to visitors looking for historic settings, walking access and a more relaxed base away from busy coastal resorts. They are particularly useful for exploring Dartmoor and Exmoor, as well as river valleys and rural landscapes.

Although these locations do not offer direct access to beaches, most coastal areas can still be reached within 20 to 45 minutes by car. For visitors focused mainly on seaside activities, coastal towns may be more suitable, but inland locations provide a quieter and often more characterful alternative.
