Hele Bay

Hele Bay is a small coastal bay located just to the east of Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast. It sits at the end of a narrow valley and forms part of a compact residential area rather than a larger resort. The beach has a contained and sheltered feel due to the surrounding cliffs and its position within the bay, and is generally quieter than Ilfracombe’s main harbour area.

The beach is mainly composed of shingle and pebbles, with some sand visible at lower tides. It is relatively small and divided by rocky outcrops, which create smaller sections of shoreline rather than one continuous stretch. The bay is enclosed by steep cliffs with patches of vegetation, and rock pools are exposed along the edges as the tide recedes. Hele Bay is known for its sheltered position and calmer water conditions compared to more exposed beaches along this part of the coast.

Access is straightforward, with the beach reached directly from the road through Hele village. There is limited parking available nearby, along with a small public car park. Basic facilities such as a café and toilets are located close to the beach, though options are more limited than in larger nearby towns. The beach is easy to reach without a long walk, but the shingle surface can make walking less comfortable, particularly near the waterline.

Hele Bay is best suited to short visits, rock pooling and general seaside use in a quieter setting. It can be appropriate for families, particularly at low tide when more sand is exposed and rock pools are accessible. It is not a surfing beach due to its sheltered nature and limited wave activity. Swimming is possible in calm conditions, though there is no lifeguard cover. The beach is most usable at mid to low tide, and its small size means space is reduced at high tide. It can be visited throughout the year, with conditions varying depending on weather and sea state.
