Plym Valley Railway

The Plym Valley Railway is a small heritage railway on the eastern edge of Plymouth, operating within the Plym Valley. It occupies part of a former Great Western Railway route and is run largely by volunteers as an ongoing restoration project. The railway is known for its short operating section, wooded valley setting and gradual redevelopment.

About Plym Valley Railway

The railway uses part of the former line that once connected Plymouth with Tavistock and further north into Devon. This route was an important regional connection before its closure in the mid-twentieth century.

Unlike some of Devon’s larger heritage railways, the Plym Valley Railway has been rebuilt incrementally rather than reopened as a complete line. The current operation is centred on Marsh Mills, where a station and visitor facilities have been established.

The line runs for a relatively short distance into the Plym Valley, with ongoing work aimed at extending the operational section over time. Infrastructure, track and rolling stock have been restored through volunteer effort, giving the railway a more developmental character.

Rolling stock includes heritage diesel and occasional steam locomotives, depending on availability and operating conditions.

The Journey

The journey begins at Marsh Mills and runs into the Plym Valley along a single-track section of line. The route passes through woodland and follows the valley landscape, with a quiet and enclosed feel compared with coastal or open countryside railways.

The ride is short and typically operates as an out-and-back journey. The emphasis is less on distance and more on the experience of travelling along a restored section of historic railway.

The surrounding area includes walking and cycling routes, and the railway forms part of a wider recreational corridor within the valley.

Practical Information

The railway operates on limited days throughout the year, usually weekends and selected event days. Timetables are less frequent than larger heritage railways and vary depending on volunteer availability and ongoing works.

Parking is available at Marsh Mills, which is the main access point. The site is easily reached from Plymouth and nearby road networks.

Tickets are available for return journeys, and fares are typically lower due to the shorter length of the line. The railway also hosts occasional special events and open days.

Summary

The Plym Valley Railway is a small-scale heritage railway focused on restoration and local engagement. Its short route, woodland setting and ongoing development distinguish it from Devon’s larger railways, offering a more informal and evolving visitor experience.
