Small Cove (Salcombe)

Small Cove is a small beach located on the eastern side of the Kingsbridge Estuary, just south of East Portlemouth and opposite Salcombe. It forms part of a series of coves along this stretch of shoreline and is typically accessed on foot or by boat. The setting is quiet and relatively undeveloped, with open countryside behind the beach and clear views across the estuary.

The cove is mainly sandy, with fine sand exposed at lower tide levels and some areas of shingle and rock near the edges. As its name suggests, it is limited in size and becomes significantly reduced at high tide. The surrounding area includes low cliffs, grassy slopes and scattered trees, creating a contained but open coastal environment. The water is generally calm due to the sheltered estuary location, and the beach is known for its quieter atmosphere compared to the main Salcombe beaches.

Access is via footpaths from East Portlemouth or neighbouring beaches, with no direct road access to the cove itself. Parking is available in East Portlemouth village, followed by a walk along coastal paths. Many visitors also reach the area using the passenger ferry from Salcombe and then continue on foot. There are no facilities at Small Cove, and services are limited to nearby beaches or the village, so visitors need to be prepared for a basic environment.

Small Cove is best suited to swimming, paddling and quiet relaxation in a less crowded setting. The sheltered waters make it appropriate for calm-water activities, though it is not suitable for surfing. The beach is most usable at mid to low tide when more sand is exposed, as space is limited at high tide. It can be visited throughout the year, with the most favourable conditions typically during the summer months. The absence of facilities and limited access make it better suited to those prepared for a short walk.
